Weed the plot before each fertilizer application.
FERTILIZER APPLICATION Apply N, P²O5 and K20 ( Nitrophoska 12:12:17), two weeks after transplanting (WAT) of seedlings to the field. Continue to do so every two weeks after each previous application. This should continue throughout the growth cycle. Place the fertilizer using spot method of application ( on both side of plants), 15 cm from the stem at about 5 cm deep then cover with topsoil. Fertilizer recommendation for eggplant cultivation in Seychelles conditions is 200-250-250 Kg/ha of N, P2o5 and k2o Mulching eggplant is very beneficial as it helps to retain moisture and keep the soil at an even temperature. Use sugar cane straws or any dry grass as mulching materials. Pruning is recommended to produce bright colored, high quality fruit. Maintain three branches per plant: two branches from the primary division of the main stalk and one. All the lateral branches are removed periodically. Remove older leaves from the lower portions of plant to allow for more air circulation and lightening within the canopy below this division. HARVESTING Start picking eggplants as soon as they are big enough to use, and keep picking them until fruits loose their gloss. Harvest at a marketable size, that is when fruit is compact and firm. To harvest cut the fruit from the stem using a sharp knife or clippers, leaving the calyx attached to the fruit. Keep 2-3 non heading leaves for protection during transport Harvest quickly and efficiently. Picking all fruits when ripe helps to increase yields. They should not be brown and hard. It is advisable to harvest once or twice a week. Remove weeds from furrows by pulling or hoeing. Weed before each fertilizer application and when necessary. Back to "How to grow eggplants" |
