The eggplant is a warm-weather crop that grows best under temperatures of 21 ° to 29 ° C. Cooler temperatures as well as higher temperatures can reduce fruit set. Though the eggplant can tolerate drought and excessive rainfall, it will not tolerate extended periods of saturated soil due to the build-up of root-rotting. It grows on fertile, well drained, soil rich in organic matter, with a pH of 5.8 to 6.8. As the Eggplant also needs a lot of calcium, add lime to the soil before you plant. A sandy loam soil is ideal when an early yield is desired. Heavier soils are preferable for longer and later yields. |
