The PRPV has been created in order to upgrade the quantitative and qualitative standards of the horticultural products so as to ensure, in priority, the supply of the regional markets and, as far as possible, to reach new export markets.
Though it is possible to identify constraints on the production as well as commercial levels, the region’s professionals have listed phytosanitary problems as the most important ones to be solved for the sustainable development of regional horticulture. They have particularly underlined that, in the region, the land under cultivation is submitted to an almost constant parasitic pressure and that the control methods against those harmful organisms are regularly inefficient. To solve these problems, the COI countries have convened to set up the PRPV with the financial support of the European Development Fund (EDF). The programme has officially been launched in 2003. |
