CIRAD and INRA organized an international network meeting in Paris on 3 June, to discuss with representatives of the global agricultural research sector the issues and priorities to be promoted. The conclusions of the meeting were forwarded to the FAO on the occasion of the High-Level Conference on World Food Security.

What does the future hold for agricultural research and what will its role be, in the light of global agricultural and food prospects? It was this question that prompted CIRAD and INRA to organize a network meeting in Paris on 3 June, under the patronage of the FAO. The meeting was attended by 300 people - higher education and agricultural research leaders, researchers and stakeholders - from some 50 countries.
The conclusions of the meeting were forwarded on 4 June to the FAO Director General, Jacques Diouf, and the participants in the High-Level Conference on World Food Security, held in Rome from 3 to 5 June 2008.
The aim is to make a long-term contribution, through agricultural research, to solving global food security problems and developing sustainable, inclusive farming systems that guarantee safe food and a living Earth.
To this end, three main types of operation were identified at the meeting: identifying common research questions through investing in global foresight exercises; proposing forums for exchanges between all players and fostering innovation processes; and boosting cooperation between and the capacity of research players.
